Any charges filed against Harthun yet, or is the legal end of his issue last week likely to go away?

Just curious. Clearly this is not as serious as Heytvelt's problem a couple years ago, but is there more information about this out there? Was it just a suspicion with no evidence, was it just Harthun's buddy, or is everybody just tight-lipped right now?

LOL herbal medicines.. thats the truth though.

Don't see u-high beating g-prep without johnson... i don't see them beating many teams without johnson..

I think it's hard to call period prepfan. Don't get to confident about your boys getting first, there is to many unknowns this year

Johnson isn't playing because he is into herbal medicines(wink, wink) and McIntyre is at U-High because of EV's coaching change.

We got another win tonight against Sacramento State. Sac. State are no world beaters, but we really didn't play our best game and still won by 14 points. I think this team will have ups and downs through the season, but .500 is a possibility with a fairly weak WAC. I also think the foul situation could make a difference in how many games we win. Depth is very shallow inside.

Another Vandal win tonight. I attached the story from govandals.com. Good job Vandals! Got a tough test against the Pilots this Saturday. This will be a good indicator on how far we have really come in the last couple of weeks.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A barrage of three-point field goals midway through the first half sparked the University of Idaho men’s basketball team and the Vandals never looked back in a 72-58 victory at Sacramento State.

Idaho hit six consecutive three pointers in a 22-4 stretch that opened up a game that saw just 20 combined points through the first nine minutes. The Vandals moved ahead by 16 and never trailed by more than nine in its first road victory of the young season.

Idaho shot 57-percent from the floor and 56-percent from beyond the 3-point line to improve its record to 4-3 on the season. The Vandals are above .500 in December for the first time since the 2002-03 season. Sacramento State fell to 0-5 with the loss.

“Our guys played hard from start to finish and this is a good win for us,” Idaho coach Don Verlin said. “I told them they need to do three things to win on the road and those are play hard, play smart, and play together. We did those things tonight. We played extremely hard from the opening tip to right at the end. It wasn’t perfect and it was a grind-out game, but we stayed together and played smart with the ball.”

Brandon Wiley took full advantage of his starting role to lead the Vandals with 19 points. Mac Hopson had a near triple-double as he finished with 15 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds while adding two steals. Trevor Morris got back on track by hitting 5-of-6 three pointers to finish with 15 points off the bench. Despite early foul trouble, Marvin Jefferson finished with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting in just 11 minutes.

“A lot of guys stepped up for us tonight,” Verlin said. “I couldn’t be happier for Brandon Wiley, who is from the area and was playing in front of a lot of his friends and family. I also was glad to see Trevor Morris respond the way he did because I have been on him hard to be a shooter for us. It was great to get all of the contributions, especially with some guys getting into foul trouble.”

The Vandals hit 29-of-51 field goals and finished 9-of-16 from beyond the arc. Idaho held a 31-29 rebounding advantage and finished with 23 assists on its 29 baskets.

The Hornets connected on just 20-of-52 (.385) attempts and committed 17 turnovers. The team hit just 7-of-19 (.368) from the 3-point line.

The game started slowly for both teams as Sacramento State held an 11-9 lead at the 10:57 mark of the first half. Wiley made a lay in to tie the score at 11-11 before Morris hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Idaho a six-point lead. Luciano de Souza followed with a three on Idaho’s next possession and Hopson hit on the following possession to put the Vandals ahead 23-11 with 8:21 remaining. After a couple of Hornet free throws, Hopson again connected from downtown and Morris followed with another from long range to make the score 29-15 at the 6:47 mark. The Vandals later moved ahead 37-19 for their biggest lead of the contest, but the Hornets closed the half on a 9-2 run to close the gap to 39-28 at halftime.

Sacramento State pulled within nine points with the first basket of the second half, but Idaho responded with four quick points and would never trail again by single digits. The margin ranged between 10 and 16 points for much of the second half before reaching its peak of 17 with 2:14 remaining and again at 72-55 with 38 seconds to play. The Hornets hit a 3-pointer on their last possession to make the final score 72-58.

Idaho briefly will return to Moscow before heading to Portland, Ore., to face the Portland Pilots Saturday (Dec. 6) at 3 p.m.

I think we have a great chance at an awesome game tomorow between prep and u high. I think u high beat them last year so there is no doubt that they believe they can do it again. Even though there best player johnson is gone. I look forward to hearing how the game went. Prep is very strong down low and has quality guards u high is in for a battle. And does any one no why the mcintyre kid left EV. He must really want to win because he is turning down the option at EV in which he could shoot every time. As for dunn great kid i know him personally and i hope he has a strong recovery.

Great job Vince, thanks for your observations, on our football players and coaches concerning moving forward. Finely a coaching staff that has a plan on how and what the needs are for a winning program year in and year out. Finally also a coaching staff that is going to work hard to achieve these results. Finely a coaching staff that is going to make sure all the players needs are taken care of. I am really going to enjoy watching our team start winning some games next year, plus extending the apple cup win streak. Peace, and GO COUGS

I don't think we are saying they didn't adapt it was that they took too long to do it. But I defer to your first hand knowledge since I didn't get to watch the practices.
Hope the recruits don't back out, they will be making a big mistake!!

So let's see, just about what I thought. Now this off season is going to be important for a couple of reasons. Kids have got to get bigger and stronger. You ain't the only one Vin who saw that. All you had to do was see the first game of the year against the OSU cowboys. You Cougs remember, I'm a man! I'm Forty! and I am still bigger and faster them there Cougs! Gundy knew it, and so did we. Can't hide small and slow.Next, no more academic casualties. The kids have to stay in school and do their friggen homework.Hey kids, is friggen a word. Anywho they also have to stay out of jail. No drunken fights at frat houses, no rat poison in your roommates food ect.ect. And finally we have to have a very good recruiting class. So kids don't be rude, if you verbal commit, stay a Coug. So the road is long, with many of winding turn. That's either a song or the drive back across state from Pullman.I close with this....can't wait for next season to start! Peace

Posted by Scott S. at It's about time to look back at WSU football season at 1 Dec 7:06 PM:

This year was all about building the program from the ground up. In my opinion the only game that the coaches truely tried to win was The Apple Cup. To me this year was nothing more than an Extended Fall Camp with a Scrimmage every Saturday.

A number of young guys got plenty of playing time. A number of other guys were tried out at different positions some of it had to do with injuries, but I believe a lot of it had to do with finding out the best position for each player.

This is the first year that the coaches have been able to fully recruit from the beginning and so far it is shaping up to be better than any class that Coach Price had.

Last, but not least as someone mentioned with regard to Michigan, transition to a new staff takes time. Adding to that Coach Walden often says he left Erickson with a pretty talented group and he was only able to win 3-games that first year.

Posted by couglar at It's about time to look back at WSU football season at 1 Dec 6:53 PM:

I think that coach Wulff and his staff will do better next year and the year after. I think he has a good plan for recruiting young men with good hearts and talent.
However, he is young and learning himself. He tried to start the season with the no huddle offense and had to give it up and with more experience he should have known that he was biting too much off.
The famous BB coach John Wooden once said (I paraphrase) that he does not hold rigidly to a set offense or his players to a rigid set of rules for play. Rather he looks at each players skill set and their strengths and weaknesses and then adapts his offense to match.
Coach Wulff needs to adapt that same strategy and thats the test of a great coach how well he can adapt to match the conditions i.e. players he has.
Oh and by the way Coach Doba was a great defensive coach.
Amen and go Cougs!

The Dunn's shopped Aaron around to G.Prep, Ferris, and Mead. They were going to buy a house wherever HE chose
to play: except Prep, no need in that case. And his old man isn't the superintendent. He is some administrative dude. He was the super.
in Cheney and he didn't move there, buy there or have his kids go to school there. Bet they wish they could have had some of that property tax. I do wish Aaron well and will stop my discussion re: the Dunns and
Halliday so that this board stays civil. Just want the facts out there.
And "a present we didn't get to open"

Very Sad, We all supported and were so proud of the last two years Ferris Saxon BB teams. That being said where did the class of 2009 go?
Just like football this years seniors
should get their shot. This class is very athletic and could compete. Go Justin Stewart but he should be playing with Pat Maher, Aaron Roberts,Casey Egger, Stan Reed, Marty Lorenz,Brett Ward,Nathan Tonani
and the list goes on. This is not to take away from the younger athletes as they are very talented and our future. I simply can't understand how a program can overlook an entire class or (two) to build a future powerhouse. Pat Maher should be playing without him it will be hard to watch.

If you are going to comment on someones grammar, than you probably should check what you type, and not say "did you flunk out of Ferris or one of the MIDDLES schools on the south hill."

Anybody hear of CV getting a transfer from Detroit? If the rumor is true could be an impact in the league. Not sure if he had to move in with one of the coaches to make it legit, maybe Sloan attended a Ferris clinic on roster expansion.

My god if you do not learn to spell you will not be able to fill out the application for Taco Bell. Once again another classy Ferris fan taking shots at kids, I am sure you were a 6th grade phenom prior to flunking out. You are another reason why people can't stand Ferris fans.

LOL @ GSL's post! Good rankings but like you said they could end up completely different. A lot of unknowns. I agree with the top 2 (although maybe swapped) but i don't think CV will finish ahead of ferris.. and ferris will sweep them... Can't wait for Ferris vs. gprep, and all the great trash talking that this blog is notorious for that comes with it

Posted by prepfan at 2008-09 GSL boys basketball glance at 1 Dec 4:07 PM:

Al- Neither of the transfers that you speak of were "phony". Both were valid in both the eyes of the GSL and WIAA. If anything was different was that Dunn did things the right way where Halliday's timing was a bit inconvenient. Either way they were both legal and above board.

Posted by Al at 2008-09 GSL boys basketball glance at 1 Dec 4:05 PM:

1.) Mike, have your webmaster fix the photo on the top of this thread. Something is boogered up and it covers a big part of your article.

2.)Notfeelin, you are off base in comparing Dunn and Halliday. Dunn's move was no phony deal to cover an athletic transfer. Dunn's family bought a home in the Mead District, and pay their taxes to that district. Mead is his neighborhood school. It is not like he found a phony uncle to live with in a convenient district. Plus, his dad is a school superintendent and professionally he would be subject to a huge downside if he pulled off a phony transfer.

Posted by prepfan at 2008-09 GSL boys basketball glance at 1 Dec 4:04 PM:

Here we go, back to the same ol bashing that Prep endures every season. I am surprised it has taken this many hours but the post by BooPrep is just plain WEAK. You dont have a better grasp on basketball talent than you do on grammar or spelling.
Prep will be solid, they proved it last year and there is no reason to think it will be any different this year. If nothing else Stockton, Long and Nicholas have all gotten better over the summer (and bigger) and in my opinion there isnt a better guard in the league than David. He is a headsy player that makes good decisions. Undersized? Maybe but this is HS ball, not college. Hey BooPrep i dare you to tell either Long or Nicholas to their faces that they play like a girl and cry. Both of them take bigger @#*&$ than you.
Is Prep better overall than Ferris say of last year? Nope. Are they capable of winning a lot of games and doing the GSL proud at regionals and state? I think so.

And BooPrep, you obviously are a Ferris guy and I too think they will be solid. I have them picked third or fourth in league this year but they are young, undersized, will take another year or two for that team to evolve.

Posted by GSL at 2008-09 GSL boys basketball glance at 1 Dec 3:54 PM:

Prep will be good. But at least God Loves Me For Free.

Posted by BooPrep at 2008-09 GSL boys basketball glance at 1 Dec 3:53 PM:

Although many people are riding on prep to do well i think there are some important facts to point out. First, the aren't that good. they are actually quite sucky. Long plays like a girl, nicolas cries, sean fisher just shoots threes all game long so if someone guards him he cant score, and david stockton might be a stockton but it is kinda unfortunate hes directly related to john because the good Stocktons all played at ferris. Also, he is really short and pretty week so i find it hard for the good teams in the gsl not to figure out that all they need to do is body him up. Further, shadle park doesn't play as a team because of a tall athletic player who might play basketball at wsu. If only he could figure out how to use his team a little more they would win the gsl with the talent around him. So this leads me to point out that ferris always has and always will be well coached, play like a team, and win basketball games. Yes, they are inexperienced, but only inexperienced at playing in a "varsity" game. The kids on ferris have all played just as much high level basketball if not more throughout their careers than any other team in the gsl, That is what is really takes to win. Their are kids on east valley and cv with some good experience at varsity, but that doesnt mean they play the same amount of basketball as a team like ferris does. SO, the gsl will be less talented this year that is evident with the passing of the best team ever, but dont go picking one team or another just quite yet.

Posted by Mead #1 Fan at 2008-09 GSL boys basketball glance at 1 Dec 3:52 PM:

I agree with Promised. There is no reason for you to come on here and bash on players you know nothing about. I think that Mead has the potential to be good this year. They are undersized, but make up for it with athletes. They are a really young team, but if the juniors step up, they will be among the elite. “Like I told the kids, it was like a present we didn’t get to unwrap,” That is my new favorite quote.. and it is so true. If the Panthers had Dunn down low, than they would be fighting it out with Prep for the top.

You are just some lonely 40 year old, that has done nothing with his life, and is mad because Aaron already has more than you, a 11th grade education. Do you know the Dunn family? I didn't think so... So why don't you just shut your mouth since you know nothing about why Aaron's family moved him into the Mead District.

I was at the EV, CV, U-High Jamboree, and suprisingly the EV knights won both games. I am certainly not making any predictions, it was just refreshing to see these boys happy and meshing (new coaching seems to be promising) they respect each other and the coach it was obvious (unlike the past few years) I hope this is a good sign for EV not to be at the bottom of the GSL as is predicted.

After a little research - they were #2 in the ESPN poll at the end of the 03-04 regular season but #3 in the AP poll. In 04-05, the highest was #10 in the AP poll. In 05-06 they spent the entire season in the top 10 in both polls, peaking at #4 right before the tournament.

In 2004 they were ranked #2 when they received a 2 seed and subsequently lost to UNR in the 2nd round. The next year two years, Turiaf's then Morrison's last years they got pretty high, too. I seem to recall them at least reaching #3 in the polls then.

This year's football team was pretty bad, but I think that our football program has a bright future. In spite of the bad season, we won the Apple Cup. In my mind, that makes the season a success.

Our team improved as the season progressed.
1. Our special teams was much improved from the previous two years.

2. The true freshmen who saw significant playing time (Bland, Toomer, Norrell, and Karstetter) did really well. I can't say the same about Ledgerwood or Levenseller because neither saw enough playing time.

3. Other young players (Turpin, Mitz, Pellum, Justin, Beck, and Blackledge) showed a lot of promise. Anderson continued to show that he is a solid WR. Staden was a solid contributor.

4. Wulff and his staff have demonstrated that they can recruit players. We have 10 commits (according to cougfan.com), all are high school players, and half are from Washington.

5. Coach Wulff has a clear vision for this program. He is going to focus on seeing that the players make progress in the weight room so that the team will be stronger next year.

I could keep writing, but I won't. I think that WSU will have a better football team this year and I look forward to the better days ahead.

Go Cougs!

I was very pleased with the victory. They played intense for 40 minutes, really defended. On offense, this is the first time in 15-20 years that UI's point guard actually understood the importance of getting the ball to the low post.

This team will have highs and lows and they certainly won't shoot 61 percent from 3-point land every night -- some of Simmons' bombs were from way, way out.

But the coaching is so much better. There's so much better fundamentals than the previous coaches, the X's and O's are way better -- guys aren't standing around like last year -- and the shot selection is good.

Perhaps this has convinced many UI fans that there are more people who can coach out there rather than just Tim Floyd's buddies.

I wouldn't be betting against the Zags in Knoxville in January. Wouldn't be surprised to see another beat down by GU. Tennessee has good athletes, but too young and schizo to win the big games. Zags have shown smarts and maturity so far, and that's hard to teach.

I dont believe Brown was given an athletic scholarship to WSU. I believe that he was given a tuition waiver because his mother works for the university but they were not willing to burn an official scholarship on him.

Will be an interesting season. Pressure is all on GP. I look for SP and GP to have some wars for the GSL title. If Dunn hadn't left SP, then SP would have it in the bag. Big mistake this early to count Ferris out of taking the GSL. They know how to win, even without the talent of the past two years. Should make for a very interesting season.

These comments about the coach and team are killing me. They are either too harsh, or not seeing reality. Yes, you need to give Wulff some time. And yes, he has made mistakes that worry me. But, we will not be significantly better next year, so be patient!!!! Wulff himself has been known to say this to people close to him, we will struggle probably more next season. We had many seniors this year that helped this team, with them gone and only RS-Freshman, true Sophs and true freshman to replace them with, it will be ugly. I'm a huge fan, and this year was WAY worse than I feel should have been and I'm not supporting Wulff just yet. But I know he needs time, and I just want to say it will not turn around as quick as some of you think. We can hope to be competitive next year (a lack of injuries would help), have better QB play (though I don't know who that will come from) and better line play on both sides. But the way I see it, none of those things will be fixed next year, so just keep cheering, look for the few positives and hope 2010 we can be competitive again. I feel bad for the seniors and next years seniors too.

I understand the struggles on the offensive side with the injuries, qb carousel, lineman switcharoo, etc... I actually liked most of the playcalling this year. Our fake plays seemed to take opponents by surprise for once, and receivers seemed to be open. Just needed players to make the plays more often. What worries me though is the progress of the D. Granted, they played GREAT the last couple of games... but I'm not sure why it took so long for a group of veterans to figure it out. A 4-3 is a 4-3 and they've had plenty of experience with it. Let's blame it on the Washington water since the Hawks and Dawgs seem to have the same issues.

This is bringing back to football, I just wanted to know what people thought who were at the ferris game about going for the 4th down and 15 on there own 40 yard line with 2 timeouts left and 4 minutes left in the game. I thought it was a bad decision but what did every one else think?

That is correct about Aaron Dunn on all scores. Good kid, good family, committed to football at WSU. Indeed, wonder if he'll see a basketball court again... Would be a shame, but who could fault him?

So much looking forward to this basketball season. My G-Prep boys will be tough. Stockton and Hansen will surprise; Fisher, Long, Nicholas, will surprise no one.

Mike Haugen one of the best and classiest coaches in the GSL. Would be nice for him to put together a deep run. He deserves it.

Glad VL is back, for many reasons -- Among them, we'll see how good a coach he is, now, without Casto, Karstetter, S. Stockton, et al. What can he do without all that talent? My bet is that the other coaches' snub of him re Coach of the Year will prove to have been more about suspect coaching abilities than jealousy, as some Ferris fans have claimed. But we'll see.

Always love to see what Sloan puts on the court at CV, even though no one is talking too much about them. He is an excellent coach.

Too bad about the U-High kid unable to play -- was looking forward to seeing him finish a fine GSL career. But high school boys will be high school boys.

And looking forward to Brown at Shadle and what he does, with alot of folks scratching their heads about the WSU scholarship. Hope he proves the doubters wrong (except against G-Prep, of course).

Here's to a good season, and a civil board.

I was heartened by the hiring of Paul Wulff. I was depressed, and still am, by the result of the 2008 season. I know it takes time to build a system and a winning tradition. I expected to give him 4-5 years to perform well.

However, what I and many of us didn't or don't understand, is what happened this year, why it happened and what is the overall effect on the program now? Was the cupboard this bear to begin with? Did certain players need to be re-positioned to perform and serve the team better? At least in one instance, although it took until the last 2 games, Andy Mattingly played well at his natural position of outside linebacker, vs his nearly season long, out of positon as a defensive end. Were there other players in similar situations? Did it take a whole year to realize that? That is management...would it have improved any outcomes...I don't know that either...but, I believe it is worth a question and explanation.

Otherwise, Paul has my support for going forward.

GO COUGS!!...GO WULFF!!

So yeah, a long, and I mean Long, season. We knew that we were in trouble last year when most of us wanted Old Bill fired. We knew the cupboard was near empty. We knew that we had more players in jail then on the field. We knew that it would take more than a summer to fix this train wreck called Cougar football. So let's take a quick look. No one likes getting blown out the way we did. And no one likes to see our scoring record broken. But we all seem to agree that the young guys started getting a little better and the Apple Cup win took a whole lot of the pain away. Last week it felt like we should of,would of, could of, against the Rainbows. And that in itself shows progress. Now if we stay the same next year as we did this year, I will be first in line to put Wulff on notice. My gut feeling with all that has happen to this team in the last year, we will come back a stronger, wiser, and a whole lot tougher next year. Peace

I don't put too much stock in the win over UCI just like I don't worry too much about the EWU loss. This team is still a work in progress. We will have some great nights and some pretty poor nights. However, I thnk as the season goes on, we will become more consistent. We are playing better D and executing the O better than we have in a LONG time. My guess is, that by the end of the season, this team will be playing pretty good ball. Not necessarily winning all of our games, but playing better, expecially against quality opponents.

Posted by bs at Chiefs fall to Kamloops at 1 Dec 10:34 AM:

I was at the game in Kennewick Friday and for 40 minutes the Chiefs looked as good as ever, except that they seemed unnecessarily frustrated. Bowman starting a fight, a bad idea to chose Schmidt, Tokarski going nuts over the penalty shot that was clearly over the goal line. It was strange. Towards the end of the 2nd they started to take a few penalties and that seemed to add to their frustration. In the third, while outshooting TC, they didn't look like quality scoring chances.

Now, while the Chiefs are in a bit of a rough stretch, I wouldn't give up on them yet, and I know you all won't. They are too good a team to just fold. Hopefully, they can put in a 60 minute effort against Calgary this week and begin to soften them up for TC on the weekend.

Also, regarding the officiating, the referees in WHL are not biased, that's just sour grapes. Don is on the mark. They are, at times, bad. I would agree that Smith is near the top of that list. I think he should always be teamed with another official. Smith's vision and game awareness are suspect and if allowed to work alone will contribute to an injury. I don't know how the league evaluates their officials, but they are missing something in the process when Smith is allowed to continue working.

I have some positive thoughts for our team, and also for wsu's administration that hired our coaches, bb and fb. The fans and alums that have been negitive since day one don't have a clue what it takes to coach a team or recruit for a team. Also most people knows it will take at least four years to build. So i will say again, we need to be patient and enjoy watching our fb team get better each year. Enough said! The cougar special teams play is the best now, that i have seen in the last five years. Also the running game is also improved a lot. I like that we can line up and get yards from the run. We have three qb's plus one recruit. the three qb's because of injurys really have little gametime experience so the coaches need to bring them along fast. With the lineman comeing back, plus the redshirts for the line, i look for a much stronger line play. We will lose a terrific linebacker in Trent, but we played three true freshman,so they gained valuable experience this year. To me i think our team will be much improved. I really, really, really like our football coaches ALL of them. I can't hardly wait till February to see all of our recruits that our hard working coaches are bringing in. I am going to give my one finger a rest now. ha ha

Patrick,
I have to disagree that Paul Wulff and his staff are weak at management. To the contrary, by not giving in to the easy way (Submitting to upperclassmen, recruiting a ton of JUCO and grade issue guys, not strictly enforcing rules, Wulff's staff showed good management and sound strategies.
How could ANY coach have come in and done better?
Wulff redshirted the guys needed (even transfers) so that the team could have more success in 09 than they had in 08. If they lost by 20 instead of 40, what good does it do?
By sticking to their "management strategy", the Cougar staff has built for the future instead of just creating stop-gaps that aren't all that effective.
Wulff had one month to recruit last year. This is his first real recruiting class, and we will be able to see the inroads he has made in Washington, by getting the #1 recruit in the state to commit to WSU (Simone from Skyline) and other solid in-state kids from Bellevue, Spokane, etc.
Recruiting and character is where the program starts. The kids bought in the last four weeks of the season, and the team got better.

This really has to be fun for the coaching staff. Only two kids to keep extra pressure on this year instead of five...They may not win it all but this is sure going to be a fun year to watch.

Stay safe and healthy, Zags.

Posted by Ed at It's about time to look back at WSU football season at 1 Dec 9:15 AM:

How is Wulff not capable? You can question some play calling I agree, but I don't believe you can question his plan. He redshirted guys that could help us this year because he knows the program is bigger than any player. Look at Minnesota, they went 1-11 last year and will make a bowl this year.

We may not make a bowl next year, but there will be improvement. Getting an OL that starts most of the way through the year woudl be most helpful. Losing the Lobster for spring practice hurts, he could really use the reps. I'm assuming it's going to be open competition in spring for QB, and that could be interesting.

Posted by rentoncoug at It's about time to look back at WSU football season at 1 Dec 9:05 AM:

Give Wulff a break. Look at Michigan this year. Far more talented team than WSU with a similar schedule strength. Rodriguez is considered a top tier coach and he went 3-9 and got blasted by their biggest rival. Regime change takes time, especially when you are overhauling the entire offense and most of the defense. The recruiting class Wulff brings in will tell us alot about the direction of the program. San Antonio in '09 should be a heck of a road trip.

Posted by zagnut at Keeping it in perspective at 1 Dec 8:59 AM:

I am SO proud of the whole organization, from Coach Few to all they guys. Every one of them, should be very proud of their accomplishments, and hungry for more. I think the teams potential is almost unlimited if they can keep everything togther, and stay healthy. Just a couple of minor issues, but nothing IMO they cannot overcome or correct.

Posted by Dale D. at It's about time to look back at WSU football season at 1 Dec 8:55 AM:

Coach Wulff is not capable, I have a strong feeling he will not make any changes and therefore show us his stubborness. We shall see but another long year of Cougar football sits in front of us. Thank goodness they beat UW.

Posted by Patrick at It's about time to look back at WSU football season at 1 Dec 8:45 AM:

Every organization must have a strategic plan plus operational plans that adhere to the strategic plan.
Equally important, the organization must have a management team that is capable of implementing those plans. The WSU football coaches are that management team and, as a group, they are weak. I said that, in this space last fall, and the season has visibly illustrated it.
The head coach must demonstrate courage and leadership. Not only must he recruit some good athletes but he must also recruit some good (replacement) coaches that can do the job properly. During the next few months, we are going to learn a lot about Coach Wulff. Particularly, we are going to learn just how capable he really is.

Posted by Diane at Chiefs fall to Kamloops at 1 Dec 7:51 AM:

I do wish the WHL would find some better officials, two awful games this weekend where the Chiefs are concerned. Pat Smith was a joke on Friday night, he has no business officiating!

The Chiefs don't have the same fire and intensity they had last year, they don't block shots like they did last year. They have moments where they completely dominate, and moments where it is like they are just going through the motions. I hope we get Roman back after the holidays, but one player won't be the savior for this team. I don't see this team defending their Championship with things as they are now. I wonder if Speltz has anything in his bag of tricks this year. It is frustrating to watch TC make deals to better their team while we stand around and watch (i.e Mitch Fadden from Lethbridge).
When the heck are we going to name a Captain, I think one thing the team lacks is a clear leader!!
Hopefully they will come back rejuvinated and ready to go after the Holiday break.

It'll be an interesting game on January 7th. The Zags are impoving quickly and steadily. Any teams that play them this year will have their hands full - just too many Zags can score. Sorta like the trying to plug multiple leaks or playing whack a mole - as soon as pressure is put on one Zag, in goes a basket from another. The Wazzu game should be interesting - whether good WSU defense can keep the Zags from scoring over 80 points. Another interesting game coming up - UConn. I'm glad that one is on the West Coast! Seattle will be rockin' for that one!

The officiating changed in the second half... the first half was like tackle football, and then they started calling all kinds of hand checks in the second half. It didn't lose the game for us, but it didn't help anything at all. Anyway, we had 10 turnovers, got out-boarded and Pitt had about 20 more shot attempts and we were only down 3 at half. Our first road trip, everyone was prolly getting a little tired. If you looked at the Pitt guys, EVERY one was ripped. Rochestie was awful, Caleb Forrest was over matched, didn't look on his game. We had a lot of bad entry passes to Baynes too, those TO's weren't really his fault. I wonder why we didn't go Casto/Baynes more, with Harmeling playing the 3 maybe? Young group, but talented. Looking forward to the next couple of weeks.

Lapses tonite will keep everyone working in practice; Downs lost his "match-up" in too many zone situations, outside shooting needs to originate with more inside-out kick-outs as opposed to periphal passes, board crashing was good, block-outs were weak, use of 35 seconds down the stretch is so important as in addition to using clock, offense needs to be practiced with shot being taken inside 8 seconds, this requires practice and confidence. Go Zags!

Like I said yesterday, Austin Daye has trouble with this kind of offense. Much to learn about defense, he has.

The officiating was atrocious. Among the various and sundry calls that went against Gonzaga and were obvious bad calls, the charge-block two-fer was comically bad. It was, by definition, a block. Duh....

I am puzzled by the rebound issue, and the only thing I can think of is that we just cannot play with that kind of frenetic energy, i.e., we're a more composed, methodical team. Still, Tennessee simply dominated the boards, vis-a-vi the offensive glass where they were getting rebounds over 2-footers directly under the basket.

Gonzaga also clearly has a free throw shooting issue. Thankfully, Tennessee decided to start fouling Micah. Micah is probably our best clutch free throw shooter.

Gonzaga's size and offensive skill matched up very well with Maryland. Tennessee runs a style of offense that concerns me a bit, in terms of whether Gonzaga's players (as great as they are) will be able to matchup. Similar to the Oklahoma State game, I think Daye could be in for a long night defensively unless Gonzaga can come out hot right away and force Tennessee to play catchup.
