Professional baseball didn't turn up in Spokane just a few years or even a few decades ago. But that observation can't begin to measure the scope of the game they call the national pastime or its influence on the region we've come to call the Inland Northwest.

Try a few numbers on for size.

Spokane fans have watched, read about and sometimes listened to 85 seasons of ball. Spokane teams have utilized five stadiums, appeared in close to 10,000 games, entertained something approaching 11 million fans and won 17 championships. These teams have employed future Hall of Fame members, a few of the game's most memorable characters and a handful of its miscreants.

And 100 years ago, for the first time, these teams became known as the Spokane Indians.
