I have lived on Bridges Road, in northeastern Spokane County, since late 1974. When I first moved there, there were six families on the four-mile stretch of that road between Elk and Jackson Road, where Jackson forms a T intersection with Bridges. I was informed by Spokane County Road Department employees when I went there last year to inquire about improving Bridges Road that there were 117 families living on Bridges then; there are more now – I don't know how many. BAYVIEW – A dispute over a Bayview sewer connection recently devolved into a diver disconnecting a restaurant's underwater sewer and water connections, an on-dock confrontation and a visit by police. Ultimately it may have to be resolved in court. None other than former Bill Clinton adviser Bruce Reed cautions Demos not to celebrate John McCain's choice of a running mate too soon. Reed, the son of Scott and Mary Lou Reed of Fernan, greeted the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with less joy than some Demo partisans who were ready to dismiss the Sandpoint native as "Geraldine Quayle" – a reference to unimpressive Geraldine Ferraro and former VP Dan Quayle. After all, Bruce said in his Slate column Saturday, the selection of Palin hit too close too home. Writes Bruce: "She was born a few miles from where I grew up, went to junior college in my hometown, and has now eclipsed Deep Throat and Larry Craig as the most famous graduate in University of Idaho history. It's as if the McCain campaign were micro-targeting my wife's demographic: exercise-crazed hockey moms from Idaho who married their high school sweethearts." Fall is in the air, but the Post Falls Community Volunteers and the Boys and Girls Club of Kootenai County will enjoy summer one last time when they team up Tuesday for the first "Fun in the Park Friend Raiser" barbecue at Q'emiln Park in Post Falls. Ongoing Route of the Hiawatha - The "crown jewel" of rail-to-trail mountain bicycle trails is operated by Lookout Pass Ski Area. Wind through 10 tunnels and seven high trestles. This 15-mile route crosses the Bitterroot Mountains between Idaho and Montana, best known for the long St. Paul Pass or "Taft" Tunnel which is 1.66 miles in length. It's all downhill with shuttle buses available to take you and your bike back to the top. A comprehensive revision of the city's shoreline master plan – including new regulations on the height and mass of buildings near the Spokane River and Latah Creek – goes before the public in an open house today and then in a public hearing on Wednesday before the city Plan Commission. It's an old profession, dating back to the 18th century, if not earlier, though they consider it less as a profession than something they just love to do. CHENEY – Because of meter-reading errors, 25 percent of Cheney's water has gone unbilled over the past three years, and the city appears to be out about $14,400. A plan for reducing wildfire danger in Spokane County calls for restrictions on building materials and a requirement for sprinklers in houses among other far-reaching goals. Highway 902 near Airway Heights will be down to one lane for the next two months as construction workers build railroad crossing signals for the new Geiger Spur Airway Heights rail line. They are also building a pullout lane for bigger vehicles to use when the train rolls by.
